Important Update: 2026 DOT Random Drug and Alcohol Testing Rates

2026 DOT Random Testing Rates

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has released the official 2026 random drug and alcohol testing rates for all DOT-regulated industries. We are sharing the details below to help you remain informed and compliant.

2026 Random Testing Rates - Key Highlights

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)

  • There are no changes to FMCSA random testing rates for 2026:

    • Drug Testing: Employers must continue to randomly test at least 50% of their average number of DOT-regulated drivers annually.

    • Alcohol Testing: Employers must continue to randomly test at least 10% of their average number of DOT-regulated drivers annually.

Other DOT agencies

  • The FRA Mechanical annual random alcohol testing rate will be 10% in 2026 (previously 25%).

  • All other agency random testing rates for 2026 remain the same as the 2025 rates.

Why This Matters

Random testing is a key tool for promoting safety and deterring substance use in the transportation industry. It is also a core DOT/FMCSA compliance requirement. Employers must meet the minimum annual random testing rates to remain compliant and avoid potential penalties or fines during a DOT audit.

Action Required

  • Review your random testing program to confirm it meets the 2026 rate requirements.
